Walk-In Safes and Modular Vault Rooms
A walk-in safe is a secure, room-sized enclosure built from vault panels and fitted with a vault door. Wilson Safe Company supplies, installs and services them for businesses across North America, and has done so since 1905.
The basics
What is a walk-in safe?
A walk-in safe, also called a modular vault or vault room, is a storage room you can step into. It is assembled from prefabricated vault panels and a vault door, instead of being poured in place like a traditional concrete vault.
Businesses choose a walk-in safe when a standard safe is too small. Retailers, pharmacies and healthcare facilities, jewelry stores, financial institutions and multi-location operations all use them to protect cash, merchandise, controlled substances and records. To compare the two approaches in detail, read modular vaults versus poured concrete.
- Size and layout: how much you store today, and how much you will store later
- Security class: the UL class (M, 1, 2 or 3) your insurer or regulator expects
- Door: the vault door type, burglary rating, fire protection and lock
- Location: floor loading, ceiling height and the path panels will take into the building
- Extras: alarm and monitoring integration, lighting and ventilation

Questions
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a walk-in safe and a vault?
In everyday use the terms overlap. A walk-in safe usually means a modular room assembled from prefabricated panels, while a vault often means a room poured or built in place. Wilson Safe supplies the modular kind.
Can a walk-in safe go inside an existing building?
Often, yes. Because the panels are prefabricated, a walk-in safe can usually be assembled inside an existing structure without the heavy construction of a poured vault. Floor loading, ceiling height and the delivery path should be confirmed before anything is ordered.
What do UL Class M, 1, 2 and 3 mean?
They are UL burglary-resistance classifications for vault construction. Each class reflects a tested level of resistance to attack. Which one you need depends on what you store and what your insurer expects, so ask your carrier first.
How big can a walk-in safe be?
Modular panels let the room be sized to your space. Send us the dimensions or a sketch and we will recommend a layout.
